Master Akash Ali is a 6 years old boy belongs to ruler part of province Sindh. His father Master Muhammad Hashim is a primary school teacher in a government school. He referred to NIBD with the diagnosis of aplastic anaemia. In this disease patient’s bone marrow is not able to produced red cells, white cells and platelets and patient need red cell and platelet transfusion. Bone marrow transplant provide cure in this disorder. BMT of this patient done on 29th September 2008 with his 8 yrs old HLA matched sister. No transplant related adverse event observed during whole period of BMT admission. He discharged from BMT on 18th October 2008 with his disease in complete remission. But he will be on some medicines at least for 1 year post transplant in order to prevent graft rejection | The story of successfully Bone Marrow Transplant Patient
Aslam is a 2 years old boy suffering from beta thalassaemia major a serious hereditary blood disorder in which patient need blood transfusion. At the age of 2 yrs. Patient also need iron chelation therapy in order to get rid of excess of iron accumulated in body. Excess of iron in body is highly injurious to different parts of body like heart, liver and endocrine glands. In Pakistan majority of thalassaemia patients died at the age of 10 years. Bone marrow transplant provide cure to these patients.
Aslam belongs to poor family and his parents was not able to bear the expenses of BMT so that Aslam’s BMT is fully supported by an Italian NGO ie Cure 2 Children (C2C). Aslam’s bone marrow transplant done at NIBD BMT unit on 6th September 2008. His transplant period of 35 days was uneventful. Now Aslam has been discharged from hospital, completely blood transfusion free but he still need care for at least for 1 year. |
